11 forts from Maharashtra have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List under the name "Maratha Military Landscapes of India." This makes it India’s 44th entry on the list.
The forts that got selected are:
Salher, Shivneri, Lohgad, Khanderi, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala, Vijaydurg, and Sindhudurg.
One more fort from Tamil Nadu, Gingee, is also included. These forts are spread across hills, forests, plateaus, coastlines and islands. The selection shows how smart and strong Maratha fort building was, based on the land and surroundings. The process took 18 months, with experts visiting and reviewing everything before taking the final call in Paris.
